Superb goalkeepeing by Swarnamayee Samal helped East Coast Railway win the 5th Jayant Mohapatra Memorial Women’s One-day Football Tournament at Unit-VI Boys’ High School ground here today. Samal effected three diving saves in the penalty shoot out as the railway side beat Government Sports Hostel in the final by 2-0 goals.
The summit clash went to the tie-breaker after play in the regulation time ended in goalless draw. In the penalty shoot out, Riki Patra and Pratima Minz scored for railway, while all four sports hostel players failed in their attempts.
Altogether four city-based teams participated in the tournament, which was organized by Unit-VI Athletic Association. Earlier in the semifinals, Sports Hostel crushed Kalinga Institute of Social Science (KISS) 3-0, while East Coast Railway edged out Urmila Football Academy 1-0.
Subhaprava Rout scored twice and Sasmita Ekka struck once for Sports Hostel, while the all-important goal for East Coast Railway was netted by Pratima Minz. Urmila FA finished third, beating KISS 3-2 via tie-breaker in the play-off match.
Champions East Coast Railway received a cash prize of Rs 4,000 and runners-up Sports Hostel were given Rs 3,000. Former Minister Padmanav Behera handed over the trophy at the closing ceremony. Former India women football team coach Mohammad Sahid Jabbar, Unit-VI Athletic Association president Tapan Kumar Mohanty, vice-president Prafulla Mishra and secretary Dilip Das were present on the occasion.
Sasmita Ekka, Tikina Samal (both Sports Hostel), Swarnamayee Samal, Manisha Panna (East Coast Railway) won the prizes as player of the tournament, best forward, best goalkeeper and best defender respectively.
